5 Places to Spend the Long Weekend this 2019

1. La Union

One of the surfing hotspots in the Philippines is none other than La Union or LU, as many who frequent the place call it. Known for its nightlife, surfing culture, and beautiful beaches, La Union has become a go-to destination for those looking for a place of relaxation and a place for recreational activities.

Where to Go: Urbiztondo Beach is one of the popular beaches in La Union for surfing, trying different dishes, and experiencing the nightlife. For people who are looking for an alternative adventure, you may want to visit Tangadan Falls instead to (with the help of a guide) trek through the scenic trail and look for perfect spots to experience cliff jumping. Plan the perfect weekend getaway at La Union!

Travel Time: By private car, it may take 4-6 hours from the Metro. By public transportation, it would take around 5-8 hours, depending on where you are coming from.

2. Baler

Hailed as the Birthplace of Philippine Surfing, Baler is also known as the prime destination to go to for a great surfing experience. Because of its location, Baler is one of the best places to appreciate beautiful sunrises

Where to Go: The Sabang Beach remains a popular destination for surfers. With the many nearby hostels, it’s relatively easy to find accommodations (save for the peak season). Sabang beach is also a great spot for watching sunsets. For those who are looking for white sand, you can skip Sabang Beach and head on over to  Dicasalarin Cove. A major plus is that it also has access to Baler Lighthouse! After climbing up a grueling number of 170 steps, revel in the view when you reach the top! This is definitely a place you should visit during the long weekend after a stressful week at work.

Travel Time: By private car, it may take 4-6 hours. By public transportation, it would take around 7-9 hours, depending on where you are coming from

Expected Budget: Around ₱3,000-₱4,000 for 3 days

Best Months to Visit: March-May; October-Feb

3. Bicol

Aside from being the home to the sublime, cone-shaped Mayon Volcano, Bicol is also now known for its beautiful beaches, dream dive spots, and majestic mountains.

Where to Go: Located in Camarines Sur, Caramoan Island is a dream come true for those  looking for an adventure by the sea. With its diverse marine life, limestone cliffs, and pristine beaches, it is a wonder that not many people know about Caramoan Island. This hidden gem is perfect for those who desire an unforgettable kayaking, scuba, or snorkeling experience. If you are looking for the pristine, beaches of Boracay, you should visit Calaguas Island. With its fine sand and blue waters, it is the ideal tropical paradise for those looking for a place of respite during the long weekend.

Travel Time: It would take around 9-11 hours by private car. By public transportation, it would take around 11-15 hours to get to the destination.

4. Palawan

Known as one of the most beautiful islands in the world, Palawan is no stranger to tourists and adventurers. Known as “The Last Frontier” of the Philippines, this stunning island is teeming with both wildlife and marine life, home to pristine beaches and crystal blue waters. Where to Go: On the northernmost tip of Palawan, El Nido is one of the most popular islands for tourists; the other two being Coron and Puerto Princesa. With heavenly seascapes and beautifully diverse marine life,  El Nido has become a favorite for travellers. Another great destination for your 2019 long weekend would be Balabac group of islands. This time, located on the southernmost tip of Palawan, Balabac is a bit more difficult to travel to. The cream and white sands of the different beaches and islands, wondrous sights of sea turtles and starfishes, and heartstopping sunrises and sunsets makes the long ride worth it.

Travel Time: Via plane, it would take around 1.5-2 hours to get to Puerto Princesa. Then you would have to travel an extra 5-7 hours via van to get to El Nido. If you are going to Balabac, from Puerto Princesa, it will take 4-5 hours to reach Rio Tuba via van. Then, you will have to take a boat ride to Balabac group of islands, which will take 5-6 hours.

Expected Budget: Excluding airfare expenses, 5,000-7,000 for 3-4 days

Best Months to Visit: January to April for El Nido,  April to May for Balabac

5. Cebu

Known as the Queen City of the South, Cebu is also a popular weekend getaway destination. When visiting Cebu, try to explore not just the city proper but the nearby islands as well! Let the magnificent islands of Cebu surprise you on your long weekend vacation.

Where to Go: For divers, Malapascua Island is surely a paradise with its bright corals, varying fish species, and clear waters.  Bantayan Island is a beautiful white-sand haven, with peaceful, blue, clear waters, perfect for those looking for a place to slow down and relax.

Travel Time:  Via plane, it would take around 1.5-2 hours to get to Mactan Cebu Airport. Then, it would take around 5-6 hours to get to Malapascua Island via bus, motorbike, and boat.  To travel to Bantayan Island, it would take around 6-8 hours via taxi, bus, and ferry.

Expected Budget: Excluding airfare expenses, 5,000-7,000 for 3-4 days

Best Months to Visit: January for the Sinulog Festival,  June to August, if you want to visit the islands
