Sending Problems with Rizz in Indoor Rock Climbing: A Bouldering Outfit Guide

So, you’ve decided to start bouldering? Smart move. It’s one of the most addictive hobbies I found outside my stressful academics. I’ve been climbing for months and if you would ask me for advice to enjoy the sport, it’s definitely about choosing the appropriate outfit that balances mobility, breathability, and durability.

Let’s break down exactly what you need and want to wear to send your next project with rizz.

Bouldering versus Top-Rope: Do You Need Different Gear?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, bouldering and traditional rope climbing or what they call top-rope have different demands.

  • Bouldering: You aren’t wearing a harness. You’ll be doing more explosive, dynamic moves, for shorter heights.
  • Top-Rope: This involves more endurance since routes are taller, requiring durable clothes that are compatible with equipment like ropes and harnesses.

That’s why for bouldering, you have more freedom to wear stylish outfits, as long as it can handle the friction of the climbing wall.

Reach & Touch Test: Choosing Your Tops and Bottoms

When picking out indoor rock climbing clothes, think about the “reach and touch” test and fabric. Avoid clothes that restrict movement or expose skin for certain routes. If it doesn’t fit comfortably or offer protection against abrasions, leave it on the shelf.

If you don’t wanna think about it too much, climbers opt for yoga set, gym wear, or acid wash fabrics that don’t make chalk marks as visible and hard to remove.

1. Tops: Depend on Motion

  • Shirts: Slabs mostly rely on your legs with minimal arm mobility so a shirt is the perfect middle ground for all three options.
  • Long Sleeves: Most vertical routes require you to lean and be in contact with the wall, exposing you to possible scratches. If this is your forte, it’s best to wear those that cover big parts of your torso like long sleeves or jackets.
  • Tank Tops and Muscle Tees: Overhang walls won’t have much contact on the skin, you may opt for muscle tees or tank tops. Make sure its fit won’t show any of your insides from below, just so you’ll feel more free to move.

2. Bottoms: Flexibility and Protection

Baggy Climbing Shorts | Cargo Climbing Pants | Ankle Climbing Pants

  • Ankle Pants: In slabs, your legs will have much contact with the wall but not as much as in vertical routes. An ankle pants may give you both the freedom to move and enough protection that you need.
  • Pants: Unfortunately, vertical problems have a tendency to be in contact with most of your legs. That’s why you’ll need climbing pants or sweat pants with good-quality fabric to protect you from scratches.
  • Shorts: Even with your lower body, overhangs won’t require much contact with the skin. You may try wearing your trusty jorts or cargo shorts for the baggy fit. Just make sure it fits perfectly on the waist so you won’t have to think about losing it while climbing.

The Other Essentials: Shoes, Chalk Bag, and Accessories

But your indoor climbing outfit isn’t complete without the right technical accessories to keep you moving so take note of these:

  • Shoes: Your shoes are your most important tool. Unlike your hiking boots, climbing shoes are meant to be tight—very tight. A snug fit ensures that there is no “dead space” in the shoe, allowing you to stand on tiny holds with precision. If you’re just starting, look for a “neutral” shoe with a flat sole before graduating to the aggressive, downward-curved shoes used by pros.
  • Bouldering Chalk Bag: In bouldering, climbers often use a chalk bag that is clipped to our waist. It’s very accessible if you need a grip-booster while solving a problem.
  • Gym Bag: You’ll need a dedicated spot for your stinky shoes (climbing shoes smell—it’s a fact of life) and your change of clothes.
  • Tumbler: Climbing is a high-intensity workout. Bring a durable, insulated water bottle to stay hydrated between attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I just wear my regular gym clothes?

You can. Venues for indoor bouldering are actually “gyms” too! You just have to gauge which ones are appropriate to use based on our “reach and touch” test.

Why do climbers use chalk?

Chalk powder or liquid chalk dries the sweat on your hands, giving you a more secure grip on the holds. Without it, you’ll find yourself slipping off.

How often should I wash my climbing clothes?

Treat them like high-intensity gym gear. Because climbing walls are covered in chalk and sweat, it’s best to wash your outfit after every session.

Gear Up and Get Climbing

The right bouldering outfit does more than just removing the distractions so you can focus on the movement—it gives you just enough confidence you need. At least, if you can’t send the problem, you have a good outfit to compromise that (don’t worry I’m with you on this).
