To thrive, air plants need bright, indirect sunlight. So think about placing your air plants in a room with southern or eastern facing windows for best results. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the humidity in your place, the more light will be tolerated by the plants. This means that if you plan on putting your air plant in an area with lots of light, be sure to mist it a few times a week. Washrooms usually make the best spaces for air plants because of the humidity! WATER: How much water does an air plant need? Watering air plants can be quite tricky because there are a variety of factors that go into this: the temperature in your home, light exposure, humidity, and air plant variety. Some people mist their air plants a few times a week, while others take the plant down and soak it in water. Others do a combination of both! If your air plants are located in a hot and sunny area, mist them 2-3 times a week. Once a week or even once every two weeks, soak the roots of your air plant in water for about 5 minutes. Then, shake the excess water off, and place the plant onto a paper towel. Allow the roots to dry completely (1-3 hours) before placing the plant back. This is very important because if the roots don't dry completely, you will get root rot! Be sure to always water/soak in the mornings! If you underwater your plants, the tips of the leaves will become brown or crispy. If you over-water your plants, there may not be much you can do! The base of the plant may turn brown or black and that means root rot has set it. CLIMATE: Air plants are pretty easygoing when it comes to temperature as long as they receive some sort of indirect light. They will thrive anywhere from 50-90F. FERTILIZING AIR PLANTS: Once or twice a month when you're soaking or misting your plant, apply a Bromeliad fertilizer. This will encourage your plant to bloom and possibility produce pups as well!
